Why is it attractive/ popular for men to have short hair?

it seems like its this way in most cultures in most parts of the world. is it because men are thought of as less beautiful than women and long hair is beautiful?

Good question! But a lot of sikh and jewish men have long hair.
Honestly, I think men found it easier to take care of and there was nothing for another man to grab in hand to hand combat. The military trimmed men's hair for those two reasons. Before the 19th century, shoulder length hair was the fashion, whether it was the owner's own or as in a wig. Most of the time it was held back with a ribbon.

Women didn't cut their hair short until the twentieth century. Having beautiful long hair was always thought attractive but became associated more with women.

Maybe, men decided they wanted to discriminate themselves from women. Maybe mothers thought it would keep people from thinking their boys were girls. Then, it became a habit.

It used to be fahsionable in the 60s and 70s. I supose it's easier for them to keep tame and less effort, and it's fashionable. I wish it wasn't, long hair is soooooo sexy!!!!!!!!!!
I'm not sure that this is true. It may be more fashionable now amongst certain cultures, but in other cultures long hair is a masculine trait. In fact, going back a long way, Samson in the Bible lost his strength when his hair was cut. Don't think that's a tale about a feminine man, especially when he had Delilah to deal with.
I dont know my daughter would point out men with long hair and shout he looks like a girl mum! from a very young age so it is part of our culture and maybe an easy way of quickly telling the difference.

May I point to exhibit A, outside of a wee short-haired cameo in Thelma and Louise, no one knew who the F Brad Pitt was till his long-maned debut, and quickly became people magazine's ';Sexiest Man Alive'; and arguably still is considered by many.



Exhibit B: Johnny Depp. 'nuff said.



I may be the only one around here with a thing for the dirty rockers like Kurt Cobain and Slash, but I don't think anyone would argue that these studs aren't g-o-r-geous

I could see how long hair are easily associated to femininity, as they are not just beautiful.

Aesthetically speaking, well, they cover up the secrets of women鈥檚 fragility, they are an invitation to their intimate world.

In a man, great shoulders have to be visible, but in a woman: you have more pleasure trying to imagine what鈥檚 under that hair, rather than explicitly seeing their naked skin. A man is much as feminine with long hair as a woman looks masculine with short hair. Of course, that鈥檚 not always the case.

Men could be beautiful and keep their masculinity even with long hair, as long as they care for it otherwise they would look a little bit 鈥榮tressed out Same is for women regarding their femininity.

True is, that there are men and women who鈥檚 hair doesn鈥檛 suit them at all, and women with short hair could look terrible too!

I might just end up saying that no matter what your hair looks like, you could be a very attractive man as long as you can play with your style, and let it be the accomplice of your success!

Short hair is easy to maintain, doesn't do things like blow in the wind or look unkempt, and is clean.
It's all about fashion. A century ago or so it was popular for me to have long hair in a pony-tail with side-boards, since then there's been skin-heads and afros. When you really look at it, men haven't had short hair for very long compared to the number of centuries before. Men's hairstyles change and go through trends just as women's.

It's for the same reason for which it isn't culturally acceptable for women to have beards. It was thought of as unattractive when our society was forming. Also, it distinguishes men from women. But in today's civilization, it is becoming less important. With the acceptance of societal reforms having to do with morality, gender is becoming less and less of an Identity.
Well in our culture short hair is seen as masculine. Even women are seen as more masculine when they have shorter hair. Truthfully, I don't know why. Great question though..you get a star!
these things vary with time and place. But I think that women are jealous of men with long hair,because the men that do grow out really long hair often have much better looking hair,without all the expensive,and time consuming products that women use...lol

It was always considered an Englishmans perrogative to wear the hair long. Short hair came about via the military to control head lice. I think the short hair idea came from Germany
